Open Innovation and Open Strategy from the perspective of Strategy as Practice: a theoretical essay
Abstract
Open Strategy (OS) has emerged as a phenomenon that has allowed organizations to adapt to the concept that incorporates Open Innovation (OI) practices with a focus on greater transparency and inclusion in strategy formation processes. Furthermore, there is increasing interest in studying Strategy as Practice (SAP), that is, the microprocesses and practices that generate significant strategic results. Despite the growth of research on OI, OS and SAP, we note that the theory is still fragmented and there are gaps, especially when it comes to a joint and interconnected approach to these themes. Therefore, the goal of this study was to understand how the concepts of Open Innovation (OI) and Open Strategy (OS) relate to each other from the perspective of Strategy as Practice (SAP). Thus, we conducted a theoretical essay was conducted based on relevant articles on the aforementioned topics. The main results indicate that OI practices can contribute to the openness of strategy from the perspective of micro-actions performed by intra- and extra-organizational participants. We emphasize the importance of continuing studies on the transfer of external knowledge and technologies that can be inserted into the strategy process and practices, since the interactions between extra-organizational aggregated actors and micro and macro practices have been largely neglected in strategy research, which leads us to believe that there are opportunities for new studies.
