Dal Duecento ad Antonello da Messina, una storia sociale dell’evoluzione del ritratto nel Basso Medioevo

Abstract

The contribution intends to make a brief examination of the evolution of the portrait in the period that goes from the thirteenth century to the end of the Late Middle Ages, till to Antonello da Messina, framing this fascinating journey from the point of v iew not only of an exquisitely historical and artistic nature but also of social history and sociology of art, to reflect on what is meant by portrait in a specific historical era and what its function is in the society of that time.
