Investigaciones arqueológicas en Salango: nuevos aportes al estudio de un antiguo sitio sagrado

Abstract

En la parroquia Salango, provincia de Manabí, Ecuador, 25 años después de la investigación arqueológica de este sitio precolombino, el reciente monitoreo de un proyecto público de ingeniería, y la excavación científica en una área de interés amenazada, aportaron considerablemente al conocimiento de la historia de esta aldea pesquera. La expansión del antiguo asentamiento desde tiempos Valdivia (si no más antes) hasta la conquista española, ahora, se encuentra determinable. En especial, entierros humanos (incluyendo una forma de rito funerario previamente no documentada por lo menos para el Ecuador), ofrendas de artefactos, y la estructurada modificación de la franja playera durante el periodo Desarrollo Regional, apuntan a la escala, complejidad y organización del lugar como centro sagrado de la época. Asimismo, es necesario reconocer la importancia de Salango como sitio Guangala cerca de la frontera norte del territorio caracterizado por esta cultura. Abstract At Salango, Manabí Province, Ecuador, twenty-five years after the archaeological investigation of the core of the pre-Columbian site discovered there, the recent monitoring of a public engineering project and the scientific excavation of a threatened area of special interest have added considerably to knowledge of the deep history of this fishing village. The expansion of the ancient settlement from Valdivia times (if not earlier), through to the Spanish conquest, is now definable. In particular, human burials (including a form of funerary ritual previously undocumented at least for Ecuador), artefact offerings and structured modification of the shore line, point to the scale, complexity and organization of the site as a sacred center during the Regional Development period. Meanwhile, it is necessary to recognize the importance of Salango as a Guangala site near the northern frontier of the territory characterized by this culture.
