Relevance. Self-development is a recognized existential value of the modern personality. This process requires taking into account many factors, including the influence of motivation and discipline. However, people do not fully realize the difference between them within the framework of self-development, which affects its effectiveness. The purpose of this work is to study the role of motivation and discipline in personal self-development, as well as a comparative assessment of their contribution to the formation of the meaningfulness of self-development of a person’s personality. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature from the field of psychology, pedagogy and sociology, observation, comparative analysis. Results. The study showed that many consider the contribution of motivation to the process of personal self-development more significant than discipline. The authors consider disciplined self-development to be more rational and effective for achieving success in any activity and self-development.
