O DESENVOLVIMENTO E AS DESIGUALDADES NOS MUNICÍPIOS MARANHENSES: do desenvolvimentismo ao neodesenvolvimentismo.

Abstract

The article presents an analysis on the development level of the Municipalities of the State of Maranhão-Brazil using the Municipal Development Index (MDI) database for the years 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010. It searches to verify the results of several development projects im- plemented in the State, fomented by the economical standard at the time, which required varying levels of State participation, as well as investments from multinational corporations. The survey referring to data from the 217 State Municipalities and considered five dimensions and 28 variants used as baseline for the MDI computing. The results showed that there were improvements in all analyzed dimensions which resulted in the development progress of all Municipalities in the region. Nevertheless, comparing the MDI averages for 1980 and 2010, slight variations were observed, with stagnation at a certain point, and in 2010, 83% of the Municipalities of the State of Maranhão still presented a very low, low, and medium development level.
