Reclaiming the Subjective Dimension of Nursing Care

Abstract

To approach nursing care from a comprehensive perspective, it is necessary to recognize the subjective dimension of hospital care practices. To this end, this research proposes an analysis of an environment that aims to objectify patients’ symptoms, diseases and treatments. The objective of this article is to answer the question posed for this research: What are the implications of inserting the concept of subjectivity in nursing care? The analysis in this article is guided by the following topics: the definition of the concepts of subject, subjectivity, hospitalization, nursing care and psychological consultation, their articulation with approaches and contributions made by psychoanalytic authors such as Freud, Lacan, Soler, Ferrari and Luchina, and with nursing models and theories that deal with subjectivity and humanity in care. The results of this research revealed the need for an interdisciplinary dialogue that includes the individual’s responsibility for what happens to them. The results also highlight the importance of facilitating psychological consultation for hospitalized patients care, through subject-centered therapeutic support.
