The given article outlines the ways of the translation of phraseological units in the belles-lettres text. Our research has been done on the basis of the novel “Maria and Wormwood at the end of the century” by Volodymyr Iavorivskyi and its English translation performed by a group of translators headed by Maxim Tarnawsky. The final aim of the given article is to define, describe, and analyse the main ways of the translation of phraseological units in the belles-lettres text. Phraseological units are structurally, lexically and semantically fixed phrases or sentences having mostly the meaning, which is not made up by the sum of meanings of their component parts. An indispensable feature of phraseological units is their figurative or metaphorical nature and usage. The following ways of translating phraseological units in the belles-lettres text were defined: translation by choosing analogue, for example – «бути як штик» - be on the dot; «бути на носі» - round the corner; «голови летять» - there’s hell to be paid for; explicatory (descriptive) translation, for example – «доля її щербата» - hers isn’t a simple fate; «бідному женитися і ніч мала» - an unlucky man has no luck even on his wedding night; loan translation, for example - «затремтiли колiна» - knees began to tremble; «земля пiшла обертом» - she felt the ground giving way under her; translation by choosing equivalent, for example – «змиритися з долею» - reconcile to fate; «подати урок» - teach a lesson; omission of the phraseological unit. The following phraseological units were not translated into English - «з дурної голови», «комар носа не підточить», «дочка на віддані», «з нього ікони писати», «гостра коса швидше щербиться», «мішок полови».
