The present article analyzes the dystopian novel La leyenda de los soles (1993) written by the Mexican author Homero Aridjis with regard to the representation of ecological problems in Mexico. Methodologically we refer to Ecocriticism. We examine the conceptions of nature inherent in the novel and the question if the novel presents an ecocentric or an anthropocentric perspective. Further, we show how the relation between man and nature, or rather, their interaction is portrayed. In this context our main interest is whether non-human entities are granted agency in the novel, that is whether they are able to take effect. In addition, we analyze if the novel correlates with ecocritical theory and if it contributes to overcome the human / nature dualism, which ecocritics consider to be one of the main reasons for the current environmental crisis.
