This article sets out to demonstrate the effective reading and appropriation of foreign books at the Escola Normal of São Paulo, through an analysis of the 1887 textbook Pedagogia e methodologia by Camillo Passalacqua, a teacher at that school. While Passalacqua appropriated authors whose values and principles diverged from his own, he also cited others whose ideological choices were, in certain respects, contrary to his own, so the textbook is marked by the eclecticism of its references. The reader, generally a future schoolteacher, was offered an original composition of the pedagogical canon in vogue in Europe and the United States.
