The incidence of diabetes has increased alarmingly in recent years. Exogenous insulin therapy is lifesaving, but obtaining good glycemic control is hard to achive. An alternative treatment for type 1 diabetes is pancreas or pancreatic islet transplantation, which cannot be widely applied due to lack of donors, the need for lifelong immunosuppressive treatment and the risk of graft rejection. A new solution is to obtain insulin secretory cells or islet tissue from pluripotent stem cells such as embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells. This review will summarize recent research and progress in pancreatic regeneration.
