To satisfy growing demands of detection of illegally used drones, this study has investigated the feasibility of drone detection by passive radar exploiting wide available long-term evolution (LTE) downlink signal. Based on the software-defined radio concept, Wuhan University has independently developed a LTE-based passive radar system. Agreements in preliminary experimental results and ground truth verify the effectiveness and practicability of such system, which indicates the potential and prospects of drone detection by LTE-based passive radar.
