Abstract Canopy temperature is an important physiological and ecological characteristic of rice plants. It can comprehensively reflect their individual characteristics, such as their adaptability to the environment and the quality of the population. This paper reviews influencing factors, variation patterns, practical applications, formation processes, and measurement techniques of rice canopy temperature. Moreover, we analyzed the weaknesses of current studies on this topic, proposed improvements to the existing methods and techniques used to measure rice canopy temperature, and systematically assessed the effects of canopy temperature on rice production. This study provides a theoretical support for the construction of an auxiliary decision‐making system to guide rice crop production practices.
