There is no doubt today that alcohol abuse leads to the destruction of the body and ruins lives both in a professional and family sense. The proportion of untreated alcohol-use disorder patients exceeds that of other mental disorders. The optimal goal of treatment is abstinence; however, it is postulated that limiting alcohol consumption significantly improves mental and somatic health parameters. Patients who abuse alcohol form a heterogeneous group, which means that proper clinical diagnosis and the availability of various therapeutic programmes raise the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. The question is whether it is possible to broaden the therapeutic goals for those abusing alcohol in the initial, warning and critical phases of the disease.
