La huelga estudiantil de 1982 y la democratización del Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica

Abstract

Resumen: Este artículo analiza la huelga estudiantil de 1982 en el Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (ITCR), que se prolongó por casi dos meses y se constituyó en el conflicto de su tipo más largo en la historia de la educación universitaria costarricense. Si bien el enfrentamiento fue motivado por el interés de los jóvenes en mejorar sus condiciones de estudio (disponer de más becas en particular), el asunto de fondo era la reforma de la estructura de gobierno del ITCR, de índole vertical y autoritaria. Mediante una estrategia que apeló en todo momento a las vías institucionales y legales, los estudiantes tuvieron éxito en su lucha, al conseguir el decisivo apoyo de la Asamblea Legislativa (Congreso) para democratizar el ITCR. Abstract: This article analyzes the 1982 student strike at the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (ITCR, in Spanish), which extended for almost two months and became the longest-running conflict in the history of Costa Rican university education. Although the confrontation was motivated by young people´s interest to improve their study conditions (notably sought for more scholarships), the basic matter was the reform made to the governance structure of the ITCR, of a vertical and authoritarian nature. The students were successful in their struggle, through a strategy that appealed at all times to the institutional and legal procedures, therefore, got the decisive support of the Legislative Assembly (Congress) in order to democratize the ITCR.
