Sloanea esmeraldana (Elaeocarpaceae) from the central Chocó (Colombia) rainforest is described here. The new species is included in section Brevispicae, where it is to be characterized by its ovoid capsules 2.65-2.9 cm in length, 1.4-1.75 cm in diameter, its straight, irritant, purple to blackish spines 3-5 mm in length, and its mumerous seeds, (2.5)3.5(4) mm in length, 1.5- 2.5 mm in diameter.
