Ideaalbeelden van het onderwijs in koloniaal Suriname. Hoe een foto meer kan tonen dan de maker bedoeld heeft
Abstract
Using a number of school photos of the Emmaschool in Paramaribo from the 1910s, the author shows how both photography and education were rooted in Dutch colonial ideas. In fact, rather than reflecting reality, the photographs showed the Dutch public an ideal image of education in colonial Suriname: the 'civilisation' of enslaved people freed in 1863 according to the European model.
