Abstract
The forests between Alagoas and Pernambuco sheltered the quilombolas and Indians that participated in both the epic of Palmares and the Cabanada (1832-35). The so-called "people of the woods" consisted of communities whose relations to each other were contradictory and complex. The forests where they lived survived through the colonial period because of their relevance to the sugar industry and to the economy as a whole.
