Enhancing Learners’ Autonomy through Collaborative Activities
Abstract
Abstract: The importance of promoting learner autonomy, particularly in English as a Foreign Language education, is increasingly recognized in contemporary educational discourse. Learner autonomy involves students taking responsibility for their learning processes, including goal-setting, material selection, and self-assessment. This study explores the potential of collaborative learning to enhance autonomy among EFL learners. Collaborative learning shifts the focus from traditional, teacher-centered methods to more student-centered approaches, aligning with the growing emphasis on lifelong learning and adaptability. By examining existing literature and empirical studies, the study addresses the gap in research regarding the impact of collaborative learning on EFL learner autonomy. It investigates how collaborative activities influence EFL students' ability to manage their learning independently and examines their attitudes and perceptions towards this instructional approach. The study employs a descriptive research design with a mixed-methods approach, involving 50 third-year EFL students from the University Center of Barika. Data collected through questionnaires reveal that while a significant portion of students identify as self-directed learners, a notable percentage still relies on teacher guidance. The findings highlight the benefits of collaborative learning, including increased engagement, motivation, and problem-solving skills. However, challenges remain in fostering individual accountability and accommodating diverse learning preferences. In conclusion, the study suggests that collaborative learning can significantly contribute to the development of learner autonomy in EFL education. The research provides recommendations for implementing strategies that encourage student responsibility, incorporating a mix of instructional methods, and enhancing student engagement through varied collaborative activities. By fostering a more autonomous and motivated learning environment, educators can better prepare students for academic success and lifelong learning.
