Sahelian Billy Goat Sperm Characteristics in Burkina Faso The macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the sperm of four Sahelian billy goats in Burkina Faso were assessed starting from 42 ejaculates collected with artificial vagina. The volumes of sperm, the pH, the mass motility and the individual motility of the spermatozoa were assessed by visual observation, pH-meter, and optic microscopy, respectively. The concentration in spermatozoa, the total production of spermatozoa per harvest, the rates of dead and alive spermatozoa, were respectively assessed by spectrophotometry and microscopy. The average characteristics are 1.28±0.85 ml for sperm volume per collection, 6.5±0.33 for pH, 3.17±1.27 for mass motility, 3.83±0.68 for individual motility, 75.83±10.7% for individual motility, 3.35±0.36 x 109 spermatozoa/ml for the spermatozoa concentration, 4.29±0.30 for the spermatozoa production per harvest and 94.5±0.033% for the percentage alive spermatozoa. The data obtained are within the normal values reported by the literature. This work is part of a protocol of collection, analysis, treatment and conservation of the sperm of Sahelian billy goat in the perspective of an artificial insemination program
