Quality of life (QOL) — a very important method which can improve the communication between a doctor and a patient, identifying the impact of the disease on the physical, mental and social well-being of a patient, the effectiveness of the therapy and the development of rehabilitation programs. The objective of the study was to investigate the psychosomatic characteristics and QOL of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD). This study was cross-sectional. It included 80 patients with FD and 93 patients with IBS according to the Rome criteria III, as well as a control group of 30 healthy volunteers. We assessed health-related QOL by the standard 4-week form of SF-8 questionnaire. When comparing the level of QOL in patients with FD and IBS, we revealed significant deterioration compared with the control group, but there were no statistically significant differences between them (p < 0.05).
