The article focuses on the role of transnational companies (TNCs) as private authorities to govern through crime in the World City Rio de Janeiro and the Global City São Paulo. Given the high vulnerability of these global actors to urban violence and crime, companies have to engage in security governance in both cities in order to ensure their business continuity. Choosing a comparative approach I argue that the individual and collective opportunities by transnational companies to contribute to the negotiation of security in conflict-prone areas in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and their spatial implications reveal the 'intrinsic logic' of both cities
