Becoming the intellectual: Pavlo Popov’s education at Rylsk Theological School and Kursk Theological Seminary (based on materials from personal fond)
Abstract
The goal of the work. With the help of the materials from the personal archive of Pavlo Popov, mainly his diaries, to investigate one of the periods of the life of the iconic scientist and teacher of the Soviet era, which included his studies at the Rylsk Theological School and the Kursk Theological Seminary. We realize that we will see this process mainly through the eyes of our hero. Research methods. To reproduce the early period of the life of Pavlo Popov, theoretical principles and methods of modern biographical studies were used, as well as historical-comparative and deductive research methods. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the entire material set of the personal fond of Pavlo Popov, which is stored in the Institute of Manuscript of the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine (Fond 285, 7,795 storageunits), was analyzed. It is about the education of the fond creator at the Rylsk Theological School and the Kursk Theological Seminary. The young man’s reading circle, which went beyond the curriculum of the educational institution and influenced his choice of his further lifepath, was partially reconstructed. Conclusions. Currently, there is no complete scientific biography of Pavlo Popov, and the basis for writing it should be prepared. Several educational institutions, both religious and secular, formed the personality of the intellectual. Studying at the Rylsk Theological School and the Kursk Theological Seminary became an important period of his life. It was in Kursk that most of his life values were formed, which led to the seminarian rejecting an ecclesiastical career in favor of a secular one.
