Effectiveness analysis of 3D printing combined guide plate technology in ankle joint replacement for the management of talus osteonecrosis and late traumatic ankle arthritis: A case report
Abstract
Introduction: Several treatment options are available for patients with talus osteonecrosis and late traumatic ankle arthritis. Ankle arthrodesis is an alternative treatment for this condition. However, ankle arthroplasty, especially 3D printing combined with guide plate technology, is a better method for the treatment of late traumatic ankle arthritis. Patient concerns: A 64-year-old woman with a history of traumatic right ankle sprain 7 years prior visited our hospital, reported significant worsening pain and limited physical activity within the last 1 year. Diagnosis: Her clinical manifestations, bone changes in ankle joint, and imaging results were all consistent with talus osteonecrosis and late traumatic ankle arthritis. Interventions: For this patient, a 3D printing combined with guide plate technology was used in the 3D printing ankle bone. The patient's stability was regularly monitored and followed up after operation. Outcomes: 3D ankle bone prosthesis was successfully implanted into the patient and complete anatomic reconstruction was performed intraoperatively. This treatment option can be an effective treatment regimen based on the success of this case after 3-year follow-up. Treatment results showed that the patient's ankle pain was obviously alleviated, her ankle activity was drastically improved, and she gradually returned to normal activity without limitations. Conclusions: Our results suggest that ankle arthroplasty with 3D printing combined with guide plate technology is an excellent treatment option for talus osteonecrosis and late traumatic ankle arthritis. The technique could be used clinically, but long-term follow-up and further data are needed to prove its efficacy.
