In aquaculture, the prevention and control of viral disease are critical for successful fish farming. In last decades, Micropterus salmoides exhibited great economic values of its good taste and nutritional benefits, thus it was highly preferred by consumers all over the world. However, the frequent outbreaks of disease caused by Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus (MSRV) is considered a big threat to further expanding of the farming industry. Until now, the knowledge about MSRV infections is limited and the underlying mechanism of infection has not been clear in M. salmoides. Hence, there is a requisite for more detailed information about the preventive and therapeutic approaches to combat MSRV. In this review, we summarize and discuss the recent knowledge about the current status of MSRV, as well as the challenge of controlling MSRV, which also need more in-depth investigations in the future.
