Recent evidence suggests that many environmental pollutants may be involved in the increased prevalence of obesity. The obesogen hypothesis suggests that human exposure to certain chemicals may damage the mechanisms of body weight control, leading to obesity in adulthood. Here, we will address this issue focusing on the evolution of key molecular players of lipid homeostasis across vertebrates and their improper modulation by environmental chemicals in fish.
