The article focuses on the dispute over the legalization of same-sex marriage in Ecuador in order to (a) explain political action in virtual worlds and (b) analyze citizenship regimes in relation to sexual rights in Latin America. The “cyborg crusades” category is used to understand the political practices, mediated by digital technology and virtual worlds, that shape how to imagine, conceive and proceed with regard to public affairs, in this case marriage between people of the same sex. It supports the idea that political action depends on the skills and competences of social actors immersed in the conflict, as well as on their effects on the production of virtual public arenas. The aim of the article is to analyze the political dispute in Ecuador around the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2019, visible in ‘polis’ on Twitter.
