Abstract

GENDER AMBIGUITY IN CHARACTERS’ STATEMENTS IN JAPANESE MANGA COMICS AND THEIR POLISH TRANSLATIONS The aim of this paper is to analyze how creators of Japanese manga comics utilize the fact that Japanese language lacks the grammatical category of gender. The analysis is preceded by theoretical background, explaining how gender can be expressed or hinted in Japanese texts. The analysis is performed on fragments of original mangas, which are presented alongside their Polish translations and explanations of translation strategies employed to reflect the original intentions.
