Hans van Ewijk pleads for the promotion of social sustainability in community development. He outlines a number of characteristics of the current policy on community development. Based on these characteristics, he concludes that this policy is compulsively focused on intervention and innovation, which results in administrative rush. Social policy should move its attention: instead of focusing on interventions, it should promote trust in the intrinsic potential power of people, organisations and communities to adapt and to improve. This climate of trust will stimulate citizens and professionals to take an active part in the creation of social sustainability in their neighbourhoods.
