Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Urinary Bladder: A Rare Entity

Abstract

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the urinary bladder are rare accounting for 0.5 to 1 % of all urinary tumours that lacks definitive predisposing factors. However, associations have been noted with old age, history of smoking, long standing cystitis and bladder calculus. These tumours exhibit an aggressive clinical course, often diagnosed at advanced stages due to their close resemblance to other bladder tumours, leading to frequent misdiagnosis. Accurate diagnosis relies heavily on systematic histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. Here in we report a rare case of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder in a 67-year-old male who presented with burning micturition and haematuria for the past 6 months. A confirmatory diagnosis was provided on histopathological examination.
