Digital technologies: a modern way to preserve and promote museum collections

Over the past two decades, digital technologies have gained unprecedented development, having a significant impact in all areas of human activity. Museums were also involved in the whirlwind of the technological revolution, and this opened up vital opportunities for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage. Due to digital technologies, museums can more effectively manage their collections, provide better preservation and study of cultural values, and increase the accessibility and attractiveness of cultural heritage for the public. Based on these considerations, the purpose of the communication is to highlight some practical ways for the museum to use technological innovation to improve its performance and gain a competitive advantage. The issues of digitization of cultural heritage at European level is considered by defining concepts in the field of digital technologies, assessing the advantages and disadvantages of using modern technologies, as well as by noting good practices for digitizing the collections of museums in countries with experience in this field. Next, the current context of the application of the digital strategy for the cultural heritage administered by the National Museum of History of Moldova is presented and analyzed in detail, being pointed out the problems and perspectives of the digitization process of the museum collections.
