Aquaculture industry in China is developing towards high density and intensification, and the accumulation of NH4+-N, NO2--N and NO3--N in water bodies has seriously affected the efficiency of water resources cycling and the quality of aquatic products. Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification(HN-AD) technology can remove nitrogen in aquaculture water under high dissolved oxygen conditions, which is the core technology for purifying aquaculture water quality. The classification status of microorganisms with HN-AD function was briefly described, and the characteristics of microbial communities with HN-AD function were expounded. The expanded efficiency of HN-AD bacteria in salinity tolerance, pesticide degradation and antibiotic removal was analyzed. Meanwhile, the efficiency of HN-AD process regulation based on environmental factors was explored, and the development direction of HN-AD technology in the future was predicted. Driven by the dual goals of sustainability and “peaking carbon”, HN-AD technology is moving towards greater efficiency, sustainability and low carbon emissions, which will help the aquaculture industry to continuously improve water recycling and farming density.
