Exploration Studies at the Middle Paleolithic Sites of the Lower Volga River in 2023

Abstract

In 2023 the Lower Volga Paleolithic detachment of the IAET SB RAS as part of a Lower Volga Expedition organized by the IHMC RAS continued the study of the Middle Paleolithic site Sukhaya Mechetka located on the northern outskirts of Volgograd, and also carried out exploration work at the Middle Paleolithic sites Chelyuskinets II and Zaikino Pepelishche, located in the Pichuga gully, Dubovskiy district, Volgograd region. The results of the work in 2023 make it possible to plan the continuation of comprehensive studies of the cultural layer of the Sukhaya Mechetka site and to resume the study of the Middle Paleolithic site Chelyuskinets II.
