Highlights Matrix diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and outer diffusion of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene on biochars were observed. Matrix diffusion rates were linearly positively correlated with the condensation of biochars produced at 200–350 °C. Adsorption rates were linearly positively correlated with the graphite defects of biochars produced at 400–700 °C.
