Abstract

The article engages with the sociological approach to the problems of collective memory from the historical perspective. The explanation starts with Maurice Halbwachs and his conception of frames of memory and goes on to examine how this was later used by Halbwachs’ followers in France, where the theory of memory was hailed as a new paradigm for social sciences. Special attention is devoted to Pierre Nora’s conception of “places of memory” (les lieux de mémoire) and Paul Ricoeur’s approach to the “workings of memory” (travail de mémoire). At the end the authors introduce their own approach, based on the ideas of system theory.
