The advancement of zeolites and their application in the pharmaceutical field are fascinating topics to discuss and explore. This review will describe the zeolite manufacturing methods employed for drug delivery, including encapsulation, granulation, and spray drying. The crucial factor that must be considered in drug delivery system based on zeolites is the characteristics of the zeolite, including pore size, Si/Al ratio, and hydrophobicity, which can affect the loading capacity and the drug release process. The drug release from zeolite commonly involves an ion exchange mechanism. Various zeolites, including FAU, BEA, MFI, and CLI, have been employed as drug carriers for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), ibuprofen, aspirin, diclofenac sodium, indomethacin, levofloxacin, and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). Therefore, this review will comprehensively discuss the advancement of zeolites as drug carriers.
