The terrorist attack launched on 11 sept 2001 on the US soil changed dramatically the entire world. Over 3000 innocent people died that day. The terrorist organization known as Al Qaeda led by his enigmatic leader Osama Bin Laden has been made responsible for the attack and became quickly the focus of the military efforts to strike back. In the matter of months, US Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy joining the Northern Alliance afgan forces reactivated by the US Special Operations Forces overthrew the Taliban regime and defeated the terrorist Al Qaeda fighters. A few survivors fled to hide over the border to Pakistan. As a NATO member Romania deployed land forces as a contribution to the instauration of the authority of a democratic Afghan government and to the stabilization effort of this country and maintained its presence in the first line of war against terrorism in Afghanistan, with a contribution with troops to operation ENDURING FREEDOM and ISAF.In the months before the withdrawal, Romania was one of the largest contributors of troops after the US, Britain, Germany and Italy. After almost 20 years of presence in Afghanistan, the international coalition realized that the military presence was no longer justified and decided to withdraw the forces. This was followed by the collapse of Afghan Armed Forces and the system of government and the return to power of the Taliban regime.Despite the dramatic end of the entire process the Romanian troops proved that they were able and had the ability availability and the spirit of sacrifice necessary to be a credible partner among the North Atlantic Alliance states.
