Online learning has become a worldwide trend. In Malaysia, there are many Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) that utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to aid the learning programs. Nevertheless, rather than adhering to a set design, the majority of HEIs use their own customized LMS. Numerous studies have been conducted on the usability of current LMS using various evaluation frameworks, such as Nielsen’s heuristics model, ISO quality standards, and technology acceptance models. However, the studies have primarily focused on the system’s current functionalities to measure the satisfaction or acceptance of using the LMS, with limited focus on the study to propose a design framework that could be used to enhance usability. The purpose of this study is to explore existing literature studies and identify the relevant factors that significantly affect the usability of tertiary education’s LMS. Finally, this paper proposes a usability design framework that could be used for further investigation and research in Malaysia’s context. It is hoped that once the proposed usability design framework is validated by future researchers, it could assist all HEIs in creating an LMS that meets education quality assessment criteria and improves study and learning effectiveness.
