In the early 20th century, European wine producers, especially in Burgundy, have developed a protected designation of origin strategy which aimed at differentiating their wine production from others on the basis of the territory ‘specificities’. This strategy leads to the rooting of the ‘vineyard and wine’ resource and reveals the emergence of a wine heritage strategy. It ensures the sustainability of the resource in time and space and allows the local wine community to reproduce and maintain its activity. But the development of a ‘vineyard and wine’ tourism needs an adoption of heritage strategies by other local actors than the wine industry. Even if the wine sector is central in wine tourism, enhancing the tourism value of the resource requires new public and private actors. These strategies are responsible for regional economic development and branding.
