Projects have gained importance for town and regional planning. The question is, in how far can the emerging new task for public planning, the organisation of innovations, explain the rise of the importance of project-oriented planning. It is argued that projects are well suited for the creation of innovation, since they provide an apt organisational framework in which planning is capable to combine creative processes with strong implementation practices. This new mode of planning is not only a sign for the decline of public planning, it also offers some chances.
