Dairy farming plays a key role in the economic development of the State of Alagoas, ranking second in the total activity performed to produce jobs and income (Zoccal et al., 2012). The natural conditions provide comparative advantages to the products of agriculture and livestock, its degree of importance rises considerably in sectors such as dairy cattle that is always on the rise. The objective of this study was to conduct a discussion about dairy farming in Alagoas through the review of literature in the sources: Google Scholar, Scielo, and local magazines that approach the subject. According to Embrapa (2014), Alagoas produces about 305 million liters of milk per year, with the most expressive milk growth in the Northeast. Alagoas is among the four states that produce the most milk: Pernambuco, 95 million; Alagoas, 52 million; Bahia, 50 million and Ceará with 38 million. The great importance of milk production in the state is well-known, and this activity is responsible for directing and generating income throughout the territory, where family farming, therefore, has gained market space and succeeding in its income and production.
