Abstract
This article analyses some aspects on the history of the brazilian early childhood education institutions. It discusses the farness and the contiguity between institutions like day care centers and kindergartens, and deals with the discriminatory policies and the clashes with educational conceptions about family and institution, education and welfare, child care and higienics, games and childrens play, development, cognition and recreation.
