Design is an important contributing factor for regional development. However, another concept to be worked on for local development is sustainability, which includes economic, social, and environmental factors. The article seeks to analyze the presence of design in public educational institutions in the Amazon region when compared to other regions of the country, as well as to verify the sustainable approach worked in the design courses of the Brazilian Legal Amazon. For this, a mapping of undergraduate and postgraduate courses (Stricto Sensu) in design and a survey was carried out to identify research groups, research projects and extension and intellectual production in 2021, and statistical analysis was applied to the collected data. As a result, significant disparities were identified regarding the presence of design at the public university in the regions of the country, with the northern region, which covers seven of the nine states of the ALB, the lowest quantity related to teaching and research in design in the country. Being noticeable the presence of design courses in regions with higher rates of urbanization and industrialization, while in the Amazon region the theme of design presents a low presence and discussion when compared to other regions.
