How to "read" a statue? The Archaeological Museum in Istanbul houses a life-size, male marble statue from the Antonine period (inv. "124 T"; Cat. Mendel no. 1390), for which the name "Emperor Marcus Aurelius next to a tropaion" has been mistakenly used. The aim of this article is to explain how the statue should be "read" correctly, whom it really represents and the context of use from which it originates.
