TLÖN, UQBAR, ORBIS TERTIUS AND POSSİBLE WORLD(S)

Abstract

Borges is fond of speculating upon the very nature of reality and his metafictional strategies first invert and then undermine ontological certainty. His use of metafiction in his work Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius explores not only the truth status of fiction but also the fictionality of the world outside the work. According to the logic of this work, if it is possible to determine the truth of a fictional world by reference to the real world then its opposite must also be true. Borges entertains the idea that Tlön as a possible world has exercised control over the actual world, a thought that this article is also trying to emphasize.
