Relation Between the Facial Injury Severity Scale Score and Length of Stay in Maxillofacial Fracture Patients at General Hospital in Surabaya
Abstract
Introduction: Fractures on maxillofacial not only give physical impact but also cause economic burden to the patients from hospitalization. The Facial Injury Severity Score (FISS) could be used as a predictor of treatment costs and length of hospital stay for certain injury severity. This study evaluated the relation between FISS score and length of stay at General Hospital in Surabaya. Methods: This is an observational analytic cross-sectional study involving 63 patients with maxillofacial fracture treated at General Hospital in Surabaya. Data collected were gender, age, etiology, site of fracture, FISS score, concomitant trauma, treatment given, and duration of hospitalization. Univariate analysis of sociodemographic data and multivariate analysis for comparative and correlative between FISS score and length of stay were done. Results: The characteristics of patients in this study were highest in the male sex (81%), age group 26–45 years old (47.6%), traffic light accident event (95.2%), lower face site (63.5%), mild FISS (63.5%), with concomitant trauma (60.3%), and get operative treatment (79.4%). The mean length of stay on participants with FISS >3 was longer than FISS ≤3 with 19.04 days and 10.98 days, respectively. There was a significant correlation between length of stay and FISS with the correlation coefficient (r value) was 0.536. Patients with FISS score >3 have a longer length of stay. Conclusion: This research establishes a relationship between FISS and length of stay. The findings may aid in providing counseling to patients regarding the cost and time required for treatment. Patients with FISS score >3 have a longer length of stay but need to be concerned about the condition of the patient in the treatment process such as the presence of comorbidities that may make the length of hospital stay longer.
