Abstract

Using the example of the youth work of volunteer fire departments (VFD) in the Czech Republic, the text shows how the combination of voluntary traditions and communist centralization led to greater commitment and higher membership in the VFD, making it the largest voluntary organization in the country even after the transformation of 1989.
