Taufik Abdullah, a renowned intellectual and historian from Indonesia, was born in Bukittinggi City in 1936. Although he spent his formative years in Payakumbuh, his roots are firmly planted in Batusangkar, Tanah Datar. After completing his undergraduate degree in the History Department at Gadjah Mada University, he pursued postgraduate studies at Cornell University in the United States. Throughout his career, Taufik Abdullah held numerous prestigious positions, including senior researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), and was actively engaged in academic discussions both at home and abroad. He believed in the importance of objective historical writing and warned against the dangers of hegemony in historical works. He encouraged young historians to think critically and broadly, and to resist hegemonic domination in the academic world. Taufik Abdullah was honored for his exceptional contributions to history and served as the esteemed "President of Asian Historians.".
