The Thoughts of Nurses About Leadership Status of Their Clinical Head Nurses In A University Hospital

INTRODUCTION: The study was conducted in a university hospital to determine the leadership style of clinical head nurses and the opinion of service nurses about leadership style of their clinical head nurses. METHODS: The research was carried out as a descriptive and comperative study which took place over the period June 2013-January 2014 at a university hospital with a sampling of 25 head nurses and their 225 subordinate nursing staff. 'Task and People Oriented Questionnaire' wa tested its validity and reliability by Comert (1999) for managers and their subordinates was used a data collection tool. The questionnaire contained 35 questions and sucored with quinary Likert. The questionnaires were distributed in closed envelopes and collected back in the same way. The data obtained was statistically analyzed with Mann-Whiney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi Square tests. RESULTS: The relationship oriented leadership average scores (6,71+-2,95 for clinical head nurses and 5,68+-3,13 for service nurses) indicate that results are close to the low level for relationship oriented leadership. The task oriented leadership average scores (11,50+-2,82 for clinical head nurses and 10,41+-3,38 for service nurses) indicate that results are middle close to the level for task oriented leadership. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It was determined that the relationship oriented leadership style of clinical head nurses is low and the task oriented leadership style of clinical head nurses is moerate. Clinical head nurses exhibited behavior of relationship oriented leadership parallel to their education level.
