Abstract Building damage assessment soon after a seismic event is a highly significant issue. Currently, sensor implementation on all the floors of a building comprising more than a few stories is not practical. This paper proposes a framework for estimating the responses of all the stories of buildings, only using data from a limited number of accelerometers. Based on cubic spline interpolation, the framework is constructed by setting of the boundary conditions at the top and the base of the building. The validity of the framework is demonstrated utilizing the E‐defense shake table test data.
