Experimental and numerical investigations in a 3 MW boiler have been conducted to explore the combustion performance of bilateral C shape burner (bC burner for short), compared with traditional rectangular burner. Result demonstrated that temperature of bC jet flow rose faster and the flame filling degree in the furnace was much better than rectangle jet flow, especially in high load conditions, the difference between the two kinds of jet flow in temperature rise gradient reached 18% and the peak temperature of the tangential core was reduced. Combined with velocity field and comprehensive analysis of O2, CO2 and CO along new burner jet, the conclusion was that the new burner jet performed better in matter diffusion and mixing, heating and combustion of the pulverized coal in initial stage of jet. Reducing environment and lower peak temperature of new burner chamber contributed to 8.4%–16.6% lower NOx generation.
